The report of the human rights organization "Odhikar"

The report of the human rights organization "Odhikar" has revealed information about the horrific oppression of the Sheikh Hasina government on the students and the public. The biggest massacre in the name of suppressing the movement took place in July-August. The report says that 1,581 people were extrajudicially killed in the country from July to August. In addition to the killings, law enforcement agencies carried out disappearances, arrests, and torture after arrest on the protesting students and the public.

This human rights organization has prepared the three-month human rights report based on reports sent by human rights activists and information published in various media outlets. The report is divided into three parts. The first part covers a significant part of the authoritarian ruler Hasina's period from July 1 to August 5, 2024. The second part covers a significant part of the interim government's period from August 9 to September 30, 2024. The third part covers other human rights violations from July 1 to September 30.

Regarding freedom of the press, it is said that journalists were killed, attacked, sued and harassed for performing their professional duties during the student and public movements in July-August during the authoritarian Hasina government. The police shot and killed 5 journalists while collecting news of this movement. On July 18, Hasan Mehedi, a journalist of a news portal called Dhaka Times, Shakil Hossain, a reporter of the Bhorer Awaz newspaper, and Abu Taher Mohammad Turab, a Sylhet correspondent of Nayadiganta, were shot dead by the police. On July 19, journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo was shot dead by law enforcement agencies while performing his professional duties near the Science Laboratory and Central Road in Dhaka. On August 5, Pradeep Kumar Bhowmik, a journalist of the Sirajganj Daily Khabar Patra, was shot dead by the police. Regarding freedom of expression, the report says that from July 1 to August 5, the Hasina government severely restricted the freedom of expression of the people. During the movement, mobile internet was shut down on the night of July 17 and broadband internet was shut down at 9 pm on July 18 by government orders. Mobile internet was restored 10 days later, on July 28, at 3 pm. However, various services including Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok were shut down for several days.

254 killed in political violence:

254 people were killed in political violence in the country from January to September this year. 8,296 people were injured in such violence during this period. Of these, 93 were killed in political violence between August 1 and 5 of this year. And after the interim government took power (from August 9 to September 30), 52 people lost their lives in political violence in the country. According to the Odhikar report, 67 people were killed in mob lynchings from July to September. Of these, 36 were killed from July 1 to August 5 and 31 from August 9 to September 30.

The report says that the July-August movement of students and the public against the authoritarian Hasina government is a historic event in Bangladesh. In the name of suppressing this movement with a strong hand, the previous government mobilized its affiliate organizations Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechchhasebak League against the protesting students. Law enforcement agencies and security forces were used to suppress the peaceful movement of the students. During this time, UN-designated armored vehicles were used to suppress the student movement. Members of law enforcement agencies and leaders and activists of the ruling party opened fire indiscriminately on the student movement. As a result, 1,581 people, including children, were killed, more than 18,000 were injured, and 550 lost their eyesight. It is believed that this number is higher. However, the number of deaths among the injured is still increasing.

BDC REMARKS

It is worth noting that the ninth national elections were held on December 29, 2008. In the elections, the Awami League won a majority and formed the government, and the cabinet members took oath on January 6, 2009. The first session of the ninth parliament began on January 25.

After coming to power, Sheikh Hasina started showing her long-standing anger and demonic attitude. She formed the International Crimes Tribunal to avenge the murder of her father. Then, by appointing judges who were strictly subordinate to Sheikh Hasina, the tribunal executed 7 people from Jamayate Islam and BNP on false charges and false testimony. On the other hand, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Delwar Hossain Saidi, a prominent scholar of international fame and the mediator of Muslims in Bangladesh, to life imprisonment. Later, Delwar Hossain Saidi died of a heart attack due to the negligence of Awami doctors.

Sheikh Hasina created a black law called the Digital Security Act or Cyber Security Act to take away the freedom of speech and freedom of the press of the general public of the country. By creating this law, she stopped freedom of speech by filing thousands of cases against the people of the country who were true patriots. Thousands of people were sent to jail. Freedom of the press was stopped. Gradually, all the media became loyal to Sheikh Hasina due to fear of lawsuits and going to jail.

Thus, the injustice of Sheikh Hasina and her party people increased day by day. To stay in power for a long time, Sheikh Hasina provided various facilities to government employees, especially the law enforcement forces, with maximum facilities. On the other hand, the BNP coalition dismissed government employees one after another on false pretexts. In the end, Sheikh Hasina became dependent on the RAB and the police.

Sheikh Hasina gave weapons to the Chhatra League instead of pens. As a result, the Chhatra League became reckless. They occupied every educational institution and created anarchy. Every hall became a brothel. This Chhatra League was involved in all kinds of misdeeds including murder, rape, arms dealing, extortion, and tender rigging. The countrymen became fed up with the atrocities of the police, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Mahila League, and Awami League. One by one, the economic institutions of BNP and Jamaat were taken over and many institutions were destroyed. In this way, BNP and Jamaat were economically crippled.

When the unjust oppression of the Awami League, Chhatra League and Police League was increasing, the common people of the country started protesting. To suppress them, on the orders of Sheikh Hasina, the Administrative League increased the level of kidnapping, disappearance, murder, case attacks and imprisonment. They built mirror houses, where hundreds of people were detained and tortured day after day. BNP and Jamaat could not hold meetings and sittings anywhere, openly or privately. The Jamaat camp was ordered to be shot on sight. Thousands of innocent Muslim brothers and sisters of this country were arrested on false pretexts and taken to the police station and tortured together. They were kept in remand for months and beaten to death. Many died unable to bear the torture. The force called RAB used to capture people and put them in the crossfire. Finally, America imposed a ban on this force.

Sheikh Hasina appointed Chhatra League cadres to all state posts to remain in power for life, and Awami League members were appointed to all important state posts including police administration, public administration, and the Election Commission. Just as Sheikh Hasina had given arms to the Chhatra League and made them a terrorist group, she had also turned the state into a police state by allowing the police to shoot at them with sophisticated weapons.

Sheikh Hasina herself has held three national elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024 while in power. But there was widespread vote rigging in all three elections. Voting was held during the day at night, which led other political parties to reject those farcical elections. Sheikh Hasina has used the Jatiya Party for her own interests.

Sheikh Hasina was dependent on three groups. (1) Cadre Chhatra League (2) Police League and (3) Awami Muktijoddha. Sheikh Hasina thought that just as the freedom fighters played a major role in liberating the country in 1971, they would always be ready with weapons of war to keep Sheikh Hasina in power for life. According to them, they would resist evil forces.

That is why Sheikh Hasina increased the allowances and benefits of freedom fighters and reserved a 30% quota for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters in government jobs.

But in the July-August student revolution, no Awami freedom fighter was seen on the field on Sheikh Hasina's behalf. Yet, a section of them has enjoyed billions of taka benefits from Sheikh Hasina by speaking about the spirit of freedom fighters.

Due to the reservation of a total of 56% quota, including 30% quota for freedom fighters, talented students in Bangladesh continue to be deprived of government jobs. Every year, 6 lakh educated people become unemployed in Bangladesh. Currently, about 26 lakh people are unemployed in Bangladesh.

On the one hand, the unemployed were not getting government jobs due to the reservation of additional quotas, on the other hand, Sheikh Hasina and her party members were smuggling thousands of crores of taka abroad, rising commodity prices, and daily attacks on the general public, cases of unjust torture, jail fines, kidnappings, disappearances, murders, mirror houses, etc. The student population was fed up and started a revolution against Sheikh Hasina from July 15, 2024, and this revolution ended on August 5, 2024.

The students named this revolution as 36th of July. During the revolution, the fascist Sheikh Hasina unleashed the law-abiding Police, RAB, Ansar, BGB on the student population with sophisticated weapons. On the orders of the fascist Hasina, the law-abiding Police, RAB, Ansar, BGB shot and killed about 2,000 students population and about 22,000 students were maimed by bullets.

The students are being shot at from all directions, from the air and on the ground, grenade attacks are going on, sound grenades are being thrown, hot water is being sprayed, yet the students are moving forward towards Ganabhaban. Unable to survive the siege of Ganabhaban by millions of students from all sides and the violent movement, Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee to India. Bangladesh was liberated from the hands of an evil force. Bangladesh became independent for the second time.

Formation of an interim government

Dr. Muhammad Yunus's interim government is the interim government of Bangladesh formed after the resignation of fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a result of the non-cooperation movement created in the wake of the 2024 quota reform movement. On 5 August 2024, the formation of this temporary government was confirmed by a delegation of coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, the President of Bangladesh and the Chief of Army Staff. The government was formed with Muhammad Yunus as the chief advisor by taking the oath on 8 August. After President Muhammad Shahabuddin declared the dissolution of parliament on 6 August, the interim government announced that it would serve until the thirteenth national parliamentary elections were held.

Currently, those who have been tortured, kidnapped and disappeared against Awami terrorists are filing cases in various courts of Bangladesh in the hope of getting justice. Many Awami terrorists have already been caught and many are absconding. However, their judicial work is going on in the International Crimes Tribunal created by fascist Hasina. If the crimes committed are proven, the countrymen believe that at least 100 terrorists including fascist Hasina will be hanged.

Terrorist Chhatra League banned

The interim government has banned the Awami League's student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League. At the same time, it has listed this student organization as a banned entity.

The decision was announced in a notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 23, 2024.

The notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs states that during various periods after Bangladesh's independence, especially during the last 15 years of authoritarian rule, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, a fraternal organization of the Bangladesh Awami League, was involved in various activities that disrupted public security, including murder, torture, mass room-centered oppression, seat trading in hostels, tender rigging, rape, sexual harassment, and other activities. Evidence about this has been published in all major media outlets in the country, and the crimes of the organization's leaders and activists have also been proven in court in some terrorist incidents.

The notification further states that during the anti-discrimination student movement since July 15, 2024, Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists have killed hundreds of innocent students and individuals by carrying out frenzied and reckless armed attacks on protesting students and the general public and endangering the lives of countless others. In addition, the government has sufficient information and evidence that even after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Bangladesh Chhatra League has been involved in conspiratorial, destructive and provocative activities against the state and various terrorist acts.

The notification states that therefore, the government has banned the fraternal organization of Bangladesh Awami League, ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League’, under the power of the ‘Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009’ and listed the student organization named ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League’ as a banned entity in Schedule-2 of this act.

Demand to ban Awami League

On August 5, 2024, under the pressure of the four-way movement of the students, she fled Bangladesh to save her life and put other leaders in the fire, and is now in hiding in India. After the formation of the interim government, an investigation was launched against the murderer Hasina and her party leaders and Awami bureaucrats. The investigation found thousands of pieces of evidence of all the misdeeds of the fascist Hasina and her followers, including kidnapping, disappearance, murder, mirror houses, rape, bribery, corruption and money laundering abroad. There are strong demands from all quarters to ban the Awami League like the currently banned Chhatra League.

Show of flexibility towards Awami League

However, many political parties, especially the BNP, do not want the Awami League to be banned. To maintain the continuity of democracy, the Chief Advisor also wants the Awami League to come to the elections.

Warning to the coordinators

But, the anti-discrimination student coordinators are warned that they will not be allowed to come to the elections before all the misdeeds of the Awami League are tried. Analyzing the attitude of the general public, it can be seen that the general public is also in favor of this opinion of the coordinators.
